On March 26, 2024 at approximately 0126 the MV Dali container ship struck the Key Bridge collapsing six spans into the water. The MD-IMT was alerted at approximately 0215 to assist the Baltimore City Fire Department in managing an incident with multiple jurisdictions and resources already working a waterborne search and rescue. With Team members attending the AHIMTA Conference in Atlantic City New Jersey and the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, Florida, the Team had rostered an Initial Attack IMT that was on scene by 0630. The MD-IMT was relieved by the USCG Atlantic Coast Strike Team Type 1 IMT at 1100 hours. While only in service for a few short hours, the Team gained valuable experience in arriving on an incident of national significance as the Initial Attack IMT; transferring command to a Type 1 (Complex Incident Management Team); and rostering a Team with Team Leadership out of state. Additionally; throughout the incident Members were allowed to shadow positions to gain insight to complex incident management.
